Blacked -Out 2014 C7 Spotted in So Cal

Blacked-Out 2014 C7 Corvette Spotted in So Cal

For those who’ve never been to California, let me be the first to tell you – it’s a huge state. As gorgeous and scenic as it is, it’s very possible to get lost in the twisty, turny roads of the desert, mountain, and valley roads. It can happen to anyone that’s not familiar with the area, even if you have a decent GPS system.
Love it or hate it, the rear of the C7 is quickly growing on us...
That’s just what happened to a pair of Gen-5 Camaro owners over the weekend. According to a recent thread on Corvette7.com, the pair of Camaros missed their turn, and stumbled upon this all-black 2014 Stingray by accident! As Camaro5 board member, Schmidty, puts it,
“ChargedCamaro and I went for a cruise today up to Borrego Springs to enjoy our cars in the awesome California weather (went from 52 degrees and snow to 84 and sun in the matter of minutes)! Thank God my buddy has no sense of direction because we missed our turn at the bottom of the mountain, but when we went back this Black Beauty had just parked in a lot we were about to pass. ChargedCamaro redeemed himself and pointed out this lucky find so we cornered the cornered in the lot and blocked all exits!
Turns out there were a couple prototype Corvette’s doing some testing on the mountain. We chatted up the Development Engineer and asked if we could take pics. I believe this Black One is the Sport Prototype and they were testing steering. The red one was on the mountain with a large black van behind it (secret service? haha). The engineers joked that it was protected by Pit Bulls. I asked about the blue one which we had seen pics of the crash on different blogs. He mentioned it was a friend of his who was driving it and that it had also recently been on the mountain. Anyway, wanted to share a few pics. This car is absolutely beautiful in person! ENJOY!

PS..we did ask about the 6th Gen Camaro. haha! And like all good employees who love their job…they had no comment. Very friendly guys who thanked us for driving GM cars. And no pics of the red one…we passed her on the mountain and it wasn't a good time to stop.”

"Tony Schumacher won a wild tire-smoking final round against Morgan Lucas Sunday to claim the Top Fuel victory at the NHRA Arizona Nationals at Firebird Int'l Raceway.

Ron Capps (Funny Car) and Erica Enders-Stevens (Pro Stock) also were winners at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event near Phoenix.

Schumacher raced to his 70th victory and fourth at FIR when he was able to get his 8,000-horsepower U.S. Army dragster under control and finish just in front of Lucas’ charging GEICO/Lucas Oil dragster. Both dragsters lost traction early in the side-by-side race, and both drivers were on and off the throttle as they navigated the dragstrip.

Ron Capps

“When you can win ugly like that it is so much fun,” said Schumacher, who beat Sidnei Frigo, Khalid alBalooshi, and Antron Brown in earlier rounds. “Both cars were set up to run really fast, and we both lost it and smoked the tires. It was lift, pedal, lift, pedal all the way down. I could hear Morgan beside me the whole time. As a driver, that kind of race is so much fun, and I enjoy winning like that more than a record run.”

It was the fourth consecutive final-round appearance for Schumacher dating back to last season, and he moves into the series points lead with the victory.

“Four finals in a row; it’s unbelievable that our team is that good,” Schumacher said. “Win No. 70. I like that number. I was stuck on 69 for a long time.”

In Funny Car, Capps earned his 39th victory and third at this event, outrunning Matt Hagan in the final round. Capps powered his NAPA Auto Parts Dodge Charger to a 4.064 at 314.90 to finish in front of Hagan’s Mopar/Rocky Footwear Charger, which trailed with a 4.158 at 300.33.

Capps reeled off a series of quick runs in the mid-4.0-second range in early round-wins over TonyPedregon, Cruz Pedregon, and Tim Wilkerson. His machine was just as quick in the final round over Hagan.

“This new car really likes to be planted early, and so [crew chief] Rahn Tobler has been working on a new clutch package,” Capps said. “In [the final qualifying session] yesterday, we finally found out what it really liked. And when you give Tobler a new combination, he’s going to bracket-car it to death.”
With the victory, Capps moves into the series points lead. With back-to-back final rounds to open the season, Capps says his NAPA team is picking up right where it left off last season.

“We are starting to feel like we are getting into the same rhythm that we were last year when we went to six finals in a row,” Capps said. “I think that both Rahn and I built up some confidence in each other [with our runner-up] at Pomona, and now here.”

Erica Enders-Stevens
Enders-Stevens outran top qualifier Mike Edwards in the Pro Stock final round to earn her fifth victory. She used a quicker reaction time in her GK Racing Chevy Cobalt to take the win against Edwards in his Interstate Batteries/I am Second Chevy Camaro. Enders-Stevens finished in 6.538 at 211.99, just in front of Edwards’ quicker but losing performance of 6.520 at 213.74.
“Coming off the season we had last year and starting the way that we did this year, it was kind of a gut check in that we wonder if we can ever get it done again,” Enders-Stevens said. “Our guys really worked their butts off during the winter, but we didn’t get the chance to test a lot. And I was a little bit nervous coming into this year because the other big teams got to test a lot. But our guys proved that they can pick up where they left off, and I’m excited.”

Enders-Stevens, who moved to second in the points standings with the win, defeated Shane Gray, V. Gaines, and Jason Line in the first three rounds and won from the No. 7 qualifying position.
“My crew chief, Dave Connolly, reminded me that every time that Jimmie Johnson wins, we win,” Enders-Stevens said with a smile. “And he told me that Jimmie won today’s Daytona 500 prior to the final. So needless to say, we’re going to be cheering for Jimmie all year.”

Following Courtney Force’s Funny Car win in Pomona last weekend, this is the first time in NHRA history that two female drivers have won races in back-to-back events to open a season.

The NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series continues March 14-17 with the Amalie Oil NHRA Gatornationals at Auto-Plus Raceway at Gainesville."

While NASCAR is trying to diversify the participants in their professional ranks, the NHRA is still bringing them up from the ranks of sportsman racers.  We can compliment staff for relegating the primary requirement for the pro category is simply the "bring the sponsors to fuel the cars" and let's get it on!

Courtney Force on National Teen Outreach Program

DEARBORN, Mich., Feb. 20, 2013—In just a year of competition among the best race car drivers in world, Courtney Force has established herself as a smart, focused competitor on the track and a solid role model away from it.

Now Force, straight from the winners circle of the famed 53rd annual O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Winternationals, and Ford Driving Skills for Life are happy to announce the 24-year-old former high school cheerleader from Yorba Linda, Calif. will continue to serve as spokesperson for Ford’s nationwide teen safe driving program for the third year in a row.

“I am really excited to be working with Ford Driving Skills for Life for my third year,” said Force, who will participate in a monthly radio show, write blogs for www.DrivingSkillsforLife.com and attend a special conference in the fall. “Last year I know we reached a lot of teens and hopefully they got the message about practicing safe driving. This year we are going to continue to try and get this important message to as many teens and parents as possible.

Ford DSFL’s National Tour will be in the Los Angeles area March 2-3, 2013. To sign up, visit https://www.drivingskillsforlife.com.

“I focus on being the safest driver I can behind the wheel of my Traxxas Ford Mustang Funny Car at 300 mph, as well as my Mustang on the street,” Force said. “There are so many distractions on the road and I really want to work with as many people as possible to make sure that everyone is safe on the road and doing what they can to practice these driving skills.”

Ford DSFL helps young drivers improve their skills in four key areas: 1) Hazard Recognition; 2) Vehicle Handling; 3) Speed Management; and 4) Space Management, as well as a special focus on distracted driving. The award-winning program was established by Ford Motor Company Fund, the Governors Highway Safety Association and a panel of safety experts in 2003 to teach newly licensed teens the necessary skills for safe driving beyond what they learn in standard driver education programs.

“We're proud to have Courtney on board as spokesperson for Ford DSFL for the third year in a row," said Jim Graham, manager, Community Relations, Ford Driving Skills for Life. "Courtney has proven to be an outstanding role model on and off the race track and teenagers really respond to her. We're happy to welcome her back for 2013."

Force worked her way up through the lower ranks of the National Hot Rod Association before earning her seat in the professional ranks in her Traxxas Ford Mustang Funny Car. The reigning Rookie of the Year and 2012 NEXT ESPN The Magazine athlete to watch will compete fulltime in the 24-race NHRA Mello Yello Series this year, regularly reaching more than 300 mph on the 1,000-foot, straight-line drag racing tracks.

Top Fuel champ Brown ready to defend NHRA Arizona Narional Title

Monday, February 18, 2013

A victory at Firebird Int'l Raceway one year ago gave Antron Brown the early-season momentum he needed to finally secure his first NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series world championship title.

The driver of the national-record-setting Matco Tools dragster will try to make it two in a row and three wins overall at the popular desert multi-motorsports facility at the 29th annual
NHRA Arizona Nationals, Feb. 22-24.

Brown, who clinched his first world championship title in dramatic fashion in November 2012 in Pomona, became the first African-American to win a major auto racing championship in the United States. He is excited to open defense of his title and begin the quest to earn his second series crown in the highly competitive 8,000-horsepower Top Fuel category.

Backing up his win from last year at FIR would be a great start. Brown held off Tony Schumacher for the victory here last February in a close final-round race. Then at the season finale, Schumacher lost in the final round, giving Brown the championship by a very thin two-point margin.

“We want to contend for a championship again, and we want to defend our title,” Brown said. “We saw a bunch of other teams step up at [preseason] testing; Brandon [Bernstein's] car was running exceptionally well, our teammate Tony Schumacher and Morgan Lucas, and the Kalitta cars were running good, and both Al-Anabi cars were running good. You have a lot of people coming out there this year, and they want to win. This is going to be another year where the competition level is going to be at an all-time high.”

Speaking of tough competition, Brown will need to hold off a host of strong challengers if he’s going to be successful in his attempt to repeat, including seven-time world champ Schumacher, a three-time winner at FIR; national speed record holder Spencer Massey; Al-Anabi Racing’s Shawn Langdon, who just won the season opener in Pomona; Mac Tools driver Doug Kalitta; GEICO driver Lucas; and Top Fuel rookie Brittany Force in the Castrol Edge dragster.

COURTNEY FORCE WINS WINTERNATIONALS

POMONA, CA ---- After grabbing her third No. 1 qualifier of her career, Courtney Force wrapped up the weekend today with her second career win and first at the season-opening 53nd annual O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway. She defeated Ron Capps in the final round of eliminations and ran the quickest pass of the weekend a 4.025 second run.

“It was definitely pretty unbelievable. My team, Ron Douglas and Dan Hood, thanks to them. They’ve given me a great race car all weekend long; a consistent one, running 4.0s. I just try to keep it straight down the center. They really made my job easy. I really owe it to those guys,” said the 24-year-old from Yorba Linda, Calif.

Force is the fourth person to qualify No. 1 and win the Winternationals in the last 25 years. She took on the No. 16 qualifier at the start of race day and never looked back. Today was the first time Force and Phil Burkart Jr. have faced each other in eliminations and the daughter of 15-time world champion John Force came out on top with a 4.066 ET at over 316 mph.

“It is always tough racing someone in the other lane no matter who they are, whether they are the No. 16 qualifier or the No. 2 qualifier.

Force went on to race No. 9 qualifier Matt Hagan in the second round and claimed victory when Hagan slowed and Force posted a 4.070 ET. She is now 4-2 to the 2011 Funny Car World Champion.

The 2012 Rookie of the Year and Nationals spokesperson for Ford Motor Company’s Driving Skills for Life also ousted fellow Ford racer Bob Tasca III in the semifinals after he fouled out and sent Force on to the final round of eliminations against Ron Capps.

“I saw the red light. I knew I was good but it was definitely pure luck. I got on the radio and I said, ‘guys, we just won that by pure luck. God wanted us to win that round.’ But you know what, Bob Tasca III, we both get fired up against each other. He’s always good on the lights so he’s always a tough competitor, but the main thing is we both bleed Ford blue and we knew one of the Fords were going to the final so we were excited about that. You know, things happen. We both just wanted to get that win and we got lucky,” said Force.

The Traxxas Ford Mustang driver next pulled off the win in an exciting matchup against Capps in the final round. Force had lost the luxury of lane choice, but posted the quickest time of the weekend, a 4.025 ET and cruised into the winner’s circle.

“Going against Capps I was honestly terrified. I knew the last time I ran him it was out here in the finals and I knew he wanted revenge. He was running well all weekend. He got lane choice over me and it definitely made me nervous. He’s a tough competitor.”

“Going down there my car was flying. It got over to the centerline and I just held onto it because I didn’t know, I thought maybe he was right out my window. I wasn’t looking over in his lane, I was just paying attention to my own, trying to keep it straight and get past the finish line to get that win and was able to get the job done. I’m excited it was definitely a tough round not knowing where he was on the track, but we were able to do it,” said Force.

By winning the first event of the season, Force also now occupies a spot on the board reserved for the first driver entered into the Traxxas Nitro Shootout that will be held in Indy at the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals. Last year, Force won the fan vote and was entered into the bonus race.

“Making it into the Traxxas Shootout, I think that’s the coolest thing here at my home track, being the first one on that list, you know my dad won the Winternationals last year and it’s pretty cool. It was kind of a bittersweet finish here in the final not getting that win and coming back and picking up where we left off and finishing our job. We got the win, got in the winner’s circle and I’m Just proud of my team.”

“That right lane for some reason has been tough for me this weekend. We spun the tires down there. We found a little bump in the road. But getting it down there and running a 4.02 in what was considered the bad lane, for me that was unbelievable. Ron Douglas just knows how to tune this car and I think we have a pretty bad hot rod going into Phoenix. I’m excited to see what we’re capable of doing.”

“It’s pretty surreal and crazy that we went to the top spot and I’m leaving here in the points lead. That just crazy to me and it’s exciting to be out here at my home track. My friends are all out here so I get to celebrate in the winner’s circle with them. I was starting to think the only race I could win was Seattle so it was kinda cool to come out here and prove myself wrong. We had a good hot rod and we had a good day,” said Force.
John Force picked a tough opponent to have one of his better runs of the weekend against. There were three winners in front of Force that advanced to the second round with runs slower than five seconds. Cruz Pedregon (5.165 sec), Todd Lesenko (5.013 sec) and Gary Densham (5.023 sec) all took out their respective opponents while Force was sent back to his Castrol GTX trailer after running 4.119 seconds at 313.07 mph.

Unfortunately for Force his opponent Ron Capps ran 4.108 seconds and took out the six-time Winternationals champion. Force was relegated to cheerleader for daughter Courtney the rest of the day. Force was able to see her get revenge on Capps with the final round win.

“I know the emotions she is going to have. I won the season opener here last year. A young kid like that doesn’t understand how it all works yet but she drover against a great champion in Ron Capps. They gave the fans a show,” said John Force.

“They were both going for it. He was trying to run one of those low 4.0s and she did it. I am really proud of her. For Traxxas and Mike Jenkins the president to have him here is key. He wasn’t in Seattle for the first win. We had a great weekend for John Force Racing. Robert Hight and I we both struggled but at the end of the day I had a neck and neck with Capps. My daughter took him out so it is all balanced to me.”

“Our dragster, I am still amazed with the job Brittany did putting that thing in the quickest Top Fuel field. Brandon Bernstein is the best. I lost to his dad in my first final and to see the next generation out here. To see the crowd at Auto Club Raceway was big. For all our sponsors from Mac Tools to BrandSource to Freightliner plus all our new sponsors like System 51, Champion, Gates Belts and Stingray Systems. To give them a win right out of the box at the first race of the season is amazing. I have had a lot of wins in my career and this one is big. We are a big family. I want to thank the media for giving my girl a chance when she made mistakes. It is a job but she loves her job.”

Robert Hight and the Auto Club Ford Mustang lost a pedalfest with Cruz Pedregon in the opening session. Both Funny Cars launched hard and Pedregon lost traction and then Hight’s Auto Club Mustang Goodyear’s came loose. Both drivers battled to get their 8,000 hp Funny Cars under control and it was Pedregon who crossed the finish line just in front of Hight.

It was a disappointing finish for Hight at his home track but he was philosophical about the outcome after just one race in the 2013 Mello Yello Drag Racing Series.

“You always want to win the first race of the season but they don’t hand you the championship trophy until the end of the season. Jimmy has been looking at a number of different issues on the Auto Club Mustang and we are getting some answers with every pass. I am glad we are going to Phoenix in four days,” said Hight. “My team and I will keep working and we will figure this Mustang out. We are creating a lot of power and honestly we are trying to get it harnessed so we can run like some of these guys that are running 4.0s all the time. We will get there and when we do you’ll see a big smile on my face.”

Brittany Force’s first day of eliminations may have been shorter than she would have liked but that did not dampen her enthusiasm for the overall experience. In the first round she lost a close race to veteran Brandon Bernstein as her Castrol EDGE Top Fueler stepped up with a weekend best 3.822 second run against Bernstein’s 3.785 second run.

“Even though we went out in the first round I am still excited and so glad to be out here racing. We got the Castrol EDGE dragster qualified. We came out in the first run going against Brandon and we actually improved. I am really happy about that. We also ran our fastest speed. It is still a good day,” said Brittany Force.

For a rookie driver it is all about the process and learning from every experience. Force took a number of positives away from her four days at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.

“I have always been that type of person. I always try and find the positive spin on things. Even though we went out first round we did get qualified. I am so happy to be qualified and that we got a chance to race. I got to run against Brandon Bernstein. I grew up watching him and his dad. That was pretty awesome to have him in the lane next to me,” said Force, the quickest rookie in Top Fuel.

“I thought I was going to be really nervous about it but I surprised myself about it. I came out here and every one told me to think about it like testing in West Palm and that is pretty much what I did. I was a lot more relaxed than I thought I would be. I put everything out of my mind and I went up there and did my thing. We had a good car and we made a good run.”

ANTRON SURVIVES CRASH, WITH FIRE!

Will post results of this event later in the week. However, this was the most important to me.

 FROM COMPETITION PLUS

antron 01

antron 02Shaken but apparently not seriously injured, reigning Top Fuel champion Antron Brown rode out a violent second-round accident during Sunday's eliminations of the O'Reilly Auto Parts Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona, Calif.

Almost at the end of his 1,000-foot race against Dave Grubnic, the engine in Brown's Matco Tools Dragster exploded. Brown was clocked going across the finish line first in 3.848 seconds at 308.64 mph.

Amid a shower of shrapnel, the car rolled onto its side, spun, and hit the left-lane wall wing/back end first, causing another burst of flames. Then the dragster shot back across the track into the right lane and skidded in its side and backwards along the right-side wall into the sand trap.

The NHRA emergency medical team checked out Brown on site but it was unclear immediately whether Brown sustained any significant injuries. He climbed from what was left of his car, popping the cockpit canopy, and walked away on his own power.

antron 03It is unknown whether Grubnic or his car sustained any injury or damage.

Counting Tony Schumacher's parachute failure and subsequent trip into the sand during qualifying, this was the second test this weekend of the canopy. Crew chief Mike Green, who helped develop the canopy, led his U.S. Army Dragster team in prepping Schumacher's car for Saturday's No. 1 qualifying runs. His car needed no repair.

With Brown's car destroyed, he will be unable to run his semifinal race against the winner of the Schumacher-Steve Torrence match-up.

Competition Plus will provide more details of the incident as they become available.

Written by NHRA Communications: Photos by Roger Richards.

c force                                                                                                                            Courtney Force raced to her first No. 1 qualifying position of the season Saturday at the O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Winternationals presented by Super Start Batteries.

Tony Schumacher (Top Fuel) and Mike Edwards (Pro Stock) also will lead their categories into Sunday’s 11 a.m. eliminations at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season-opener at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.

Force grabbed the No. 1 spot from Friday’s leader Jack Beckman in her Traxxas Ford Mustang with a performance of 4.036 seconds at 318.24 mph. This is her first No. 1 qualifier at Pomona and third of her career.

“I’m really excited because it’s my home track,” Force said. “I’m pretty excited that we got the No. 1 spot, but I’ve still got to focus and not get distracted by anything. It’s definitely exciting to have (sister) Brittany running (in Top Fuel). She is my best friend and really amazing to be living our passion and drive 300 mph race cars. There are not a lot of families that can say that. It’s really unique to be doing it with my dad (John Force) and family.”

Force will line up against Phil Burkart in the first round of eliminations. Her father John, the defending event winner, qualified 11th while teammate Robert Hight is 12th.  Defending Funny Car world champion Jack Beckman qualified second in the field followed by Gary Densham, Del Worsham and Cruz Pedregon.

In Top Fuel, Schumacher powered his U. S. Army dragster to the 72nd No. 1 qualifying position of his career with his pass of 3.753 at 324.05.

“It was a great to be the number one,” Schumacher said. “That was a phenomenal run. That’s a consistent race car and doing some great stuff. The conditions aren’t going to change at Pomona. We are running really good and assume the other cars are going to run good too. Great cars make you rise to the occasion and do a great job. Fans pay big money to see a good race.”

In the opening round Schumacher will face Brazilian rookie Sidnei Frigo, who rounded out the quickest Top Fuel field in NHRA history. Brandon Bernstein took the second spot in his Protect the Harvest/MAVTV dragster with a performance of 3.761 at 325.22, while defending Top Fuel world champion Antron Brown qualified fourth in his Matco Tools dragster.

Edwards took the top spot in Pro Stock for the 42nd time with a performance of 6.528 at 212.39 in his Interstate Batteries/I Am Second Chevy Camaro.  He will open eliminations against Chris McGaha at an event he has won one time in three final round attempts.

“I’m ecstatic and real proud of my guys,” Edwards said. “We did a phenomenal job. It’s going to be interesting tomorrow and we’ll see what happens but real proud. I think you’ll see some real good runs by the Pro Stockers tomorrow. This is an exciting way to start the season.”

Veteran driver V. Gaines qualified second in his Kendall Oil Avenger with a performance of 6.538 at 211.49. Defending Pro Stock world champion Allen Johnson qualified 10th for his first event in the 2013 season.
